A reception will begin at 5:30 pm and the banquet will follow at 7 pm. The banquet will honor University of Wisconsin forward Blake Geoffrion, the 2010 recipient of the Hobey Baker Memorial Award, and legendary University of New Hampshire coach, Charlie Holt, the 2010 Hobey Baker Legend of College Hockey.
Blake Geoffrion won the 30th annual Hobey Baker Award as college hockey’s top player while helping his Wisconsin Badgers to the NCAA national championship game. A fan favorite, the always jovial Geoffrion finished the season third in the nation in goal scoring with 28 in 40 games. He led all scorers in the country with 15 power play goals. Geoffrion was second in the WCHA conference in points, was named a First Team WCHA all-star, was the NCAA West Regional MVP, a west All-American and became the first Badger to win the Hobey. He recently signed a pro contract with Nashville and potted two goals in his pro debut with Milwaukee of the AHL. The family bloodlines of Geoffrion are incomparable. His dad Danny, granddad Bernie “Boom Boom” and his great grandpa Howie Morenz all played for the Montreal Canadiens. Boom Boom is credited with popularizing the slapshot and along with Howie, the two won a combined nine Stanley Cups and both had their numbers retired. Geoffrion will also throw out the ceremonial first pitch at Friday’s Twins game vs Baltimore.
Charlie Holt is best remembered as a player, coach and innovator of the game of hockey. He was a student of the game - some would say he was a visionary, utilizing strategies that had his UNH teams ahead of their time. Known for his trademark fedora, Holt posted 347 career wins at UNH in his 18-year tenure behind the Wildcat bench, he made the ECAC playoffs 14 times, the NCAA playoffs four times, including Frozen Four appearances three times (‘77, ‘79, ‘82). Charlie was recognized by his peers with the Spencer Penrose Award as college hockey’s top coach on three occasions: 1969, 1974 and 1979. He was inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in 1997 before passing away in March of 2000.
The banquet will feature two of college hockey’s top coaches: Mike Eaves of Wisconsin and Dick Umile of New Hampshire as guest speakers.
